BJ SAMPSON

I’m mash up between Nas’ Illmatic and 18th Century Architecture. I was never the coolest kid and failed to fit into many of the boxes that society set out for me. I was raised in one of the most violent and poverty stricken communities in America, where many young black men don’t make it out. Instead of being a prisoner of circumstance, I used my situation as fuel for entrepreneurship and inspired others from my community.

Growing up I was drawn to athletics and the arts. I attended Edison Tech High School where I participated in Varsity Sports and frequented the design labs, photography and music studios. I began my professional career shooting a music video for a childhood friend. There was literally no budget, just our imagination and our immediate surroundings. I guess I did a good job because not long after I was shooting music videos for other local musicians.

I instantly fell in love with filmmaking – the cameras, the techniques and the people.  What I loved most about it was the storytelling, I am able to direct and visualize the concepts and ideologies that I wanted to bring to light. With the camera I am able to capture reality or create my own. This is same capacity for storytelling that I bring to all my projects. We all have a story, and I want to capture it for you.

I got into marketing because I realized early on that if I were to do photography and video full time, I would need to promote my myself. So I watched videos and read literature on marketing and branding, I’ve done promotional shoots with other creatives and I have printed out materials. After years and years of practice, I have built my own brands and style. All of this skill and knowledge I have been able to accumulate I want to share with the world. But most importantly I want to keep learning and to be able to create more strong brands.
